FAQ Learning Flute
Is the flute difficult to learn?
This is subjective question and it does depend on each individual. Based on the thousands of students we have accepted over the years, this is the average translation of difficulty in the various categories, where 1 is the easiest and 5 being the most difficult.
Starting difficulty: 3/5
Progression difficulty: 4/5
Maintenance of Instrument + Portability: 2/5
How long does it take to learn the flute (to a proficient level)?
Assuming one is taking weekly 45-minutes flute lesson and one has been practising diligently, this has been the average time at FAMA for one to be able to play ABRSM Grade 1 equivalent pieces fluently:
1) Teen/Adult with music background: about 3 months of flute class
2) Teen/Adult with NO music background: about 6 months of flute class
3) Children between 5 - 12: about 9 - 24 months (varies greatly because of age, ability and commitment)
Some people ask how long does it take to be PROFICIENT in the flute? Proficiency is rather subjective. Assuming if one is looking at being able to play those pop or Christmas music off the shelves, a desired level would be equivalent to ABRSM Grade 4 or 5. These are again the average time taken for a student at FAMA to achieve, let's say Grade 5:
1) Teen/ Adult with music background: about 24 months of flute class
2) Teen/Adult with NO music background: about 42 months of flute class
3) Children between 5 - 12 years: about 45 - 84 months (varies greatly because of age, ability and commitment)
Do you also know that for every 50 students who decide to try the flute, 49 will sign on a 2nd flute lesson. Most people are always surprised after the first trial, they have some progress in sound (Especially with the corrected posture and embouchure).
